Laser Hair Removal

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautions that several manufacturers of lasers have gotten approval to claim they can deliver "permanent reduction" of hair growth. This is not the same as "permanent removal" of hair growth. Permanent removal of hair is difficult in areas with a thick amount of follicles, where each follicles has to be permanently neutralized. The Mayo Clinic warns customers that laser hair removal procedures are most successful on people with dark hair on light skin. It can be used on people with darker skins. Another problem is that if you have a sun tan, it is best to stay out of the sun a week or so and let the tan subside. People with sun tans are more prone to complications after laser hair removal treatments such as blistering and discoloration. Actually, it is even better if you avoid sun exposure, sunless tanning products and tanning salons for four to six weeks before the laser procedure. When you go to the laser treatment center, you make sure you have shaved two or three days before the procedure. The laser hair removal only works on short stubble. When the actual procedure is performed, the patient and the doctor have to wear goggles to prevent any accidental eye damage from the use of the laser light. A cooling gel is first applied to the skin generally, to protect it. The laser light is adjusted to a wavelength, so that when it is applied over the skin, it damages the hair follicles (hair roots, sacs) to retard and damage their growth. To do this successfully, usually several laser treatment sessions are necessary. A normal side effect of the procedure is that the hair stubble is burned singed. There will actually be a noticeable smell of burning hair while this procedure takes place; do not be alarmed, this is normal. Areas treated for laser hair removal range from small areas like the upper lip and the chin, which take only a few minutes to much larger areas. Common large areas treated with laser removal include the bikini line, and the back, which can take as long as several hours. Hair removal can be anywhere from 40 to 80 percent or more. As people age, often hair eventually grows back. The hair that grows back is often lighter and finer than the original hair removed was. This can be treated and removed by subsequent laser hair removal treatments.
